Eligibility basics for NRIs, PIOs and OCI holders.
General position
Non-resident Indians can generally buy life, health and motor insurance in India from Indian insurers, subject to each insurer’s underwriting rules, FEMA norms and the laws of the country where they live.
Country restrictions
Some countries restrict or discourage the sale of overseas insurance to their residents, and some insurers choose not to accept applicants from certain countries. Eligibility is therefore checked case by case.
Residence status
Your insurer will ask for your passport, visa or work permit, and overseas address. If you move back to India, tell the insurer; your policy usually continues.
Medical underwriting
Medical tests, when required, are often arranged in your country of residence through a network or approved lab.
Products that suit NRIs
Term plans to protect Indian dependants, health policies for parents in India, savings plans for goals in India, and motor cover for vehicles you own in India.
