How NRIs can pay insurance premiums

NRE, NRO and inward remittance explained.

NRE, NRO and inward remittance explained.

Accepted sources

Premiums are generally paid from an NRE or NRO account in India, or by inward remittance from your overseas account through banking channels.

Autopay

Set a standing instruction or auto-debit from your NRO or NRE account so that premiums are never missed.

Third-party payments

Insurers usually do not accept cash or third-party cheques for premiums; payments should trace to the policyholder.

Currency planning

Premiums are due in rupees. A weaker rupee lowers the cost in your currency; a stronger rupee raises it. Our NRI planner shows the effect.

Receipts and proofs

Keep premium receipts and bank advices for tax filing in India and in your country of residence.

Important. Rules vary by insurer, product and country, and change over time. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
